Modalities
The modalities described very briefly here,
are just a few of the possible ways in which
a psychologist might work. Within these
modalities there are various levels of use,
and a range of techniques that may or
may not be employed.
Brain-Based Therapy
This therapy uses current knowledge in neuroscience as well as a century of accumulated knowledge in psychology to offer effective well-rounded treatments. This therapy operates from the premise that understanding the cognitive processes, or how the brain works, aids a person’s recovery. It also uses techniques that have been proven over time to produce results.
Art Therapy
Mary likes to use a multi-modal approach in art therapy. This includes visual, tactile, written exercises, movement and even music. All artistic forms are potentially available to explore people’s experience and meanings. Art therapy can be a powerful yet gentle way to discover what barriers reside within, and what new forms of self-expression and ways of being that a person may wish to explore.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
CBT is an evidence-based approach to psychological treatments. It derives from our cognitions or thoughts, and behaviours that can be changed for a person to feel different about their life. It includes a person setting some clear goals for themselves and exploring individual strategies that can facilitate change. Often specific tasks are set and the results are considered in follow up sessions.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT sets out teach us acceptance first of any condition that we may experience. It is fascinating to note, that often when we accept something, it starts to change anyway. This is a powerful concept. There are also behavioural and cognitive strategies that will facilitate change in a gentle and deep manner, but these do require some Commitment. By examining our values we can also explore why we act the way we do and make decisions about our future.
Transactual Analysis (TA) and Gestalt Techniques
TA employs Ego State models to explain human functioning. It also utilizes Redecision Therapy and Gestalt techniques to facilitate change. These techniques and models of behaviour can invite powerful change really quickly. People often experience real shifts in their functioning, and can even wonder why they used to do what they did, once they have made a new decision about their internal world.
